みなさん、こんにちは。ヨーロッパ産大麦担当フィールドマンの保木です。
7月中旬、協働契約栽培の産地のひとつであるデンマークを訪問しました。
デンマークといえば世界的にも有名な大手ビールメーカーがあるビール大国のひとつです。よって当然のごとく、原料であるビール大麦もヨーロッパの大陸と陸続きのユトランド半島をはじめ、周辺のフュン島やその他の島でも広く栽培されています。緩やかな傾斜の大麦畑越しに海が見える景色は大変美しく、歴代の担当フィールドマンが皆、惚れ込むほどの美しさです。

デンマークのビール大麦は、3～4月に播種し、8月に収穫を迎えます。今は、無事、収穫も終わっているでしょう。
7月の訪問時は、畑で収穫前の大麦の生育状況や栽培の安全性に関する確認をする「収穫前ミーティング」を行いました。
今回は、協働契約栽培のパートナーのおひとり、フュン島の生産者Hverringe Gods（ベリンゲ・ゴッズ）氏をご紹介します。

ゴッズさんは貴族出身で、1800年代から変わらないこの大きなお城のような建物が彼の住宅兼オフィスです。毎年2,000トン以上の大麦を生産されるゴッズさんは畑もとびぬけて大きく、デンマークの重要な生産者のおひとりです。

デンマークは環境保護に熱心な国としても有名です。畑だけでなく、海上などいたるところに風力発電の風車があり、もはやデンマークの風景の一部。また、自転車大国でコペンハーゲン市内の道路は自転車専用道路が完備され、これも環境保護に敏感なお国柄の表れでしょう。
農業においても、法律で肥料の使用量に制約があったり、農薬の使用についても厳しい管理がされたりしています。大麦の品質は肥料の量や栽培方法にも影響されますので、今回も当社が求める品質とそのための栽培方法について、ゴッズさんと話し合いました。このようなコミュニケーションを通じ、より品質の高い安全な大麦をつくっていただくことがフィールドマンの重要な仕事です。

出張したときは、その土地の食事とビールを嗜むのも楽しみの一つ。今回のデンマークでは、名物のスモーブロー（オープンサンド）とビールを楽しみました。写真はサンドイッチの具材例とエールタイプのビールです。

こうした世界の食文化を社内にフィードバックすることも、フィールドマンの仕事のひとつなのです。

Hello! I’m a Fieldman, Takehiro Hoki for barley CCFS (Collaborative Contract Farming System) in Europe.
In this column, I introduce Denmark, one of the CCFS barley producing countries in Europe. As you might know, Denmark is one of the Scandinavian countries which is consisted of Jutland and over 500 islands. Jutland and several islands are connected by bridges and I have impression that it is very close to sea from everywhere. Every Fieldman loves landscape of barley fields with beautiful seashore. Denmark is one of ‘Kingdoms of Beer’ in Europe and therefore malting barley is grown in Jutland and also in other islands.

In Denmark, seeding of barley is from March to April and harvest is normally in August. This time I went there for ‘Pre-harvest meeting’ in July 2014. In the meeting, I checked the growth condition of CCFS barley (this year barley growth looks very good!) and the safety of grower’ s practice for barley growing.

I met several growers this time and I introduce Mr. Hverringe Gods in Fyn Island. He is one of the biggest growers in the CCFS program in Denmark and produces over 2,000 tons of barley in a year! He is originally from noble class and still use an over 200 years old building like a ‘Castle’ as his office!

Denmark is a country famous for policy and activity for environment protection. You can see wind mills for generation of electricity everywhere. Also you can see many cyclists in city parts and even in countryside. There are severe restriction for agriculture, for example limit of fertilizer input and restriction for agrochemical use. Every time when I visit him, we discuss how to use fertilizer or agrochemical use etc. because it has impact on barley quality.

I always look forward to having local foods with local beers when I go out for business trip to foreign countries. This time I enjoyed ‘smørrebrød’, which is Danish open sandwich, smoked salmon, marinated sardine, scrambled egg or sausages etc. on brown rye bread. Yummy!!!
